you can put acorns in the oven on fairly low heat to get rid of those little larval wormies. we learned the hard way when daughters collected them in large quantities only to discover "friends" had occupied the space. after a long bake the capsneed to be glued back on sometimes.
I did the same thing two years ago. I spent probably an hour picking up acorns out of the yard, only to be disgusted at my new "friends" a few days later. I have heard good things about the baking (or if you pick up acorns that already have a little round hole in them, that means the worm has already left :)
Some day Jane will be lining those up and playing with them. BTW, you have wonderful friends! (below post).
I totally did the same thing! I had the acorns on my counter and then one day I noticed worms everywhere! Gross! They so don't tell you that on the Martha Stewart blog!
Acorns float when they are worm-infested--solid acorns sink!
